Crying March 7, 2007

Here are my questions about crying:

  1. Is crying really good for you?  Does it ACTUALLY release tension?
  2. Does crying help calm you down so that you can manage your sadness?
  3. Has someone ever told you, “Stop Crying!”  and did that actually work?  haha.  If you said “Yes,” I don’t believe you.
  4. Do you think it’s possible to run out of tears?  When someone says, I’ve been so heartbroken and cried so much, I can’t cry anymore because I ran out of tears — do you believe that?
  5. Is it possible to cry so much that you become dehydrated?
  6. Has crying ever hurt your throat before?
  7. If you see a loved one cry, does that make you cry or cry harder?
  8. What if nobody cried – would the world appear more strong or be more strong?  Would the world have more problems because they couldn’t release through crying?

Sorry for the sad post….

    1. Personally, I think crying is an amazing feeling. A good cry makes me feel as high as a kite. I can’t describe the feeling any other way. I used to cry all the time but now it is really hard for me, so in those moments of complete vulnerability, I appreciate the tears.
    2. No, not at all. When I start to cry and I figure out how good it feels, I don’t want to stop. I want to let it ALL out.
    3. No one has ever said that to me… Does that make it wrong because I’ve said it to you?
    4. You can’t run out of tears! BUT sometimes crying does make you run out of breath!
    5. I’d hope that you weren’t crying that much. I think it would have to be an extreme and consistent amount to cause dehydration.
    6. No
    7. I definitely cry if I see a loved one cry. Watching someone hurt like that is a terrible feeling.
    8. I think it is a non-point. That is the same as saying, “What if we took away emotion?”

My dad used to say, “Downey’s cry when Sears is closed!” because my Mom and her family cried so frequently. Mom said that she used to have a big crying problem so she started to read books about it. One of the things she learned was that people cry because they want someone to walk over to them, give them a hug, and tell them everything is going to be ok. Once you realize that, I think you will have a much different perception of your own crying. It really affected me.

Those are good thoughts Alana. It’s OK to “wear your heart on your sleeve”. I can cry at a commercial. I don’t think it’s possible to run out of tears but once you calm down and take a deep breath after a comforting hug everything seems better. Sleep helps too. I notice Karin posted this at 3AM. Everything seems better in the morning. I love you sweetie. Keep crying. It means you care.

  3. [...]  I have some fine friends 9.    There are no scientific studies on the effects of crying on dehydration. I have personally noted that in the past 72 hours I have consumed 9 One Liter bottles of [...]
